Our Moba Frontosa wild stock is sourced from collectors in Africa, meaning the fish are shipped to us from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Moba are collected around Mtoto, Congo and transported from Lake Tanganyika across Tanzania to export stations in Dar. From Dar they are shipped across the world, usually stopping in Europe and being transferred to a USA bound plane. From packing in Dar, to unpacking at our facility, the fish may travel for 50+ hours. We have been importing since 1999 and have long established relationships with several different suppliers. The difficulty and expense of collections, as well as global demand, keeps the price of these spectacular fish high.
In addition to wild Moba, we offer Juveniles and young fish, usually F-1 generation (from European breeders, specifically from Czechoslovakia. The Czech breeders are becoming established as the top producers of quality African Cichlids. We also have a nice colony of wild breeders in our facility that produce high quality fry.
Moba, as well as all other Zaire Blue variants from Congo, are difficult to breed and usually produce small size broods. Thus, prices for juveniles and young fish is high relative to other frontosa variant
We are frequently asked what fish are compatible with frontosa? Most Altolamprologus species, such as calvus or compressiceps will do fine. Others, such as Synodontis catfish are also compatible. We offer a few types of compatible fish, or others can be purchased from our sister site Cichlids and Herps.
Keep in mind that Moba get large

Keep in mind that Moba get large (males over 12" and females around 8"), so companions should be chosen carefully. If you start with juvenile fish, and they grow up together, the frontosa will usually not bother tank mates, even when they reach mature size. Wild-caught fish are a different story as they often see smaller fish as food.
